Acuvue Toric Contact Lenses

Do you suffer from astigmatism? Acuvue toric contact lenses offer two options for people with astigmatism who thought they might not ever be able to wear soft contact lenses.

First of all, it's important to understand why people with astigmatism need specialty contact lenses. Astigmatism is a condition of the eye which causes blurry vision. A healthy eye has a round shape, like a ball; but an eye affected with astigmatism becomes elongated until it is shaped more like a football.  This unusual shape and the resulting vision problems prevents “normal” contact lenses from fitting appropriately.  Therefore, eyes with astigmatism need lenses that are shaped specifically for the oblong shape of the eye; this is known as a toric contact lenses.

Toric lenses have basically two lenses built into one, similar to bifocal glasses. This allows for part of the lens to manage the astigmatism, and the other part to correct the vision. For this reason, the toric contact lense prices tend to be a little higher than the cost of regular lenses.

There are two types of Acuvue toric contact lenses: Acuvue Advance Brand for Astigmatism and Acuvue Oasys Contact Lenses for Astigmatism. Both lenses are designed using Acuvue's Accelerated Stabilization Design (ASD) and Hydraclear Plus technology to create the most comfortable fitted toric lenses.

Acuvue's Accelerated Stabilization Design ensures that the lens stays balanced and in place on the eye, instead of moving around or being affected by gravity as with other toric lens brands. ASD technology works with each blink of the eye, to keep the lens aligned correctly. The main problem with most toric lens brands is that the lens rotates around during the day. This not only creates discomfort but also is the reason most people with astigmatism have difficulty wearing soft contact lenses.

Acuvue toric contact lenses are designed with four stability zones which prevent the lens from rotating and keep it in place, resulting in consistent, clear, comfortable vision.

Acuvue's Hydraclear Plus technology keeps the lens moist, and retains moisture all day for long wearability and comfort. In addition, the Hydraclear technology ensures the lens is extra smooth and allows 98% of oxygen to reach the cornea, which adds to the long-wearing comfort of the lenses.

There are only a few minor differences between Acuvue Advance Brand for Astigmatism and Acuvue Oasys Brand; Oasys has a few improvements over the older Acuvue Advance Brand. The main differences are the comfort, the length of wearability of each lens, and the cost.

Acuvue Advance recommends that you take the lenses out each night; with daily wear, the lenses can last up to two weeks before needing replaced. Acuvue Oasys, on the other hand, can be worn up to six nights consecutively, and replaced every 1-2 weeks as needed. This offers a bit more flexibility to fit your lifestyle.

Oasys also improved its oxygen permeability, which results in a more comfortable lens. On the other hand, Acuvue Advance comes with a much cheaper price tag; up to 40% cheaper than the Oasys brand.

Regardless of which of the two lenses you choose, you are bound to be thrilled with your newfound freedom from glasses with your Acuvue toric contact lenses.
