One of the most popular special effect lenses is black sclera contact lenses.  These pitch black contact lenses cover the entire eye, even the whites of the eye; which creates an eerie and profound effect.

Black sclera contact lenses are most popular as Halloween contacts, when people want to really make an impact with their costume.

They are used most often with people who want to mimic the look of the dead, or zombies or vampires (although there are other types of vampire contact lenses and zombie contact lenses too). Since these contact lenses cover the entire eye, they create a look of having empty eye sockets or eyes that are just one big pupil. Therefore, they are very popular at Halloween or as part of theatrical or movie productions.

Some of the more eclectic personalities use them as part of their every day look; especially as gothic contact lenses. However, since the sclera lenses cover the entire eye, they are not recommended for every-day use.

One of the most common questions is whether you can still see out of black sclera contact lenses. Yes, there is still a clear part over your pupil, which allows you to see. Some people report more restricted or tunnel vision; others report no problems at all.

The lenses that do restrict your vision are the sclera contact lenses that come in different colors, like red, white, or opaque. Since these don’t have a clear section for your pupil to “peek” through, you will either see the world through that color or not at all. However, since the black sclera contact lenses can have a clear part for your pupil without ruining the effect, most people can see just fine through them.

Be forewarned, however; sclera lenses can be challenging to put in. If you’ve never worn any contact lenses at all before, you might have a particularly difficult time getting them in. But with practice and a little bit of patience, you will soon pop them in and out like a pro.

There is also a popular misconception that you do not need a prescription to buy costume contact lenses. Even if you have perfect vision and do not need vision correction, you still need a prescription to buy any kind of contact lenses. That is because your eye needs to be measured to make sure your lenses fit correctly. If you wear lenses that don’t fit correctly, you can get an eye infection, experience discomfort, or even lose your sight.

Also, your fun contact lenses need to be cared for just like “real” lenses. They need to be cleaned and stored appropriately; and never, ever share your lenses with anyone else.
