Contact Lense Care Tips
Did you know that without proper contact lense care, you risk not only the health of your eyes, but also risk going blind?
Finding the perfect contact lenses is only half the battle. Now you must learn how to care for your lenses. Unless you wear daily disposable contact lenses, you are going to wear your lenses repeatedly; which means your lenses are going to get dirty and built up with deposits. Keeping your contact lenses clean and disinfected will ensure better comfort and protect your eyes from infection and even blindness.
If you follow the following steps, your lenses will stay clean, safe, and comfortable. - Consult with your eye doctor or the manufacturer to see which brand of contact lense solutions work best with your brand of contact lenses, and never switch brands without doing the same. Be aware that not all contact lense care products are safe to use with all contact lenses. Of course, if you buy a particular brand name of contact lenses, it is wise to use their solutions to ensure optimum compatibility; but it is not always required.
- Keep your contact lens products and cases clean. It doesn't do any good to clean your lenses and then store them in a dirty lense case. Rinse your case in hot water and allow it to dry when it's not in use. Never touch the tip of the contact lense solution bottle to anything at all; this can contaminate the bottle and the solution.
- All soft contact lenses require the same basic steps for optimum contact lense care: clean, rinse, disinfect, repeat.
- Be sure to wash your hands first, with soap and water so as to not transfer any germs to your lenses.
- Take one lens and put it into the palm of your hand, and use a few drops of the recommended contact lense cleaner. With the tip of a finger, gently rub the lens in the cleaning solution for twenty seconds. This will loosen up any debris or deposits that built up on the lens during the day.
- Rinse the lens in the recommended rinsing solution, taking plenty of care to rinse the lens thoroughly. Skimping on solution results in lenses that aren't thoroughly rinsed, and can only cause damage to your eyes.
- Store your lens in the case with fresh solution, don't re-use solution from the previous day.
- Repeat these steps every day, unless you wear extended wear lenses; in which case, follow these steps every time you take out your lenses. Be sure to throw away your lenses at the recommended length of time (usually two weeks to one month, depending on your lenses).
- Never rinse your contact lenses in water. Water carries a microorganism that can cause eye infections.
- Disinfect your lenses as recommended by your eye doctor or lens manufacturer.
