Costume Contact Lenses

Nothing can top off a great Halloween costume more effectively than costume contact lenses.

After all, just about everything else has “been done.” “Unique” costumes or clothes? Seen it all. Crazy masks? Been there, done that (and they’re uncomfortable, too). Extreme wigs? Yawn.

But show up with bright yellow eyes, or pupils that look like they’ve melted in a nuclear explosion and are now glowing green, or black sclera lenses that turn your eyes into liquid pools of zombie death…now you’ve got a costume!

Costume Contact Lenses

And all this can be achieved easily, with the use of costume contact lenses.

These special effect contacts are also known as “movie contact lenses” because they were originally created for use in the creation of movies. The first movie to use special effects contacts was Miracle for Sale in 1939. The lenses were made of glass and very uncomfortable; but the effect was so profound that a new industry was born.

In the late 70s and early 80s, a stream of vampire movies using vampire contact lenses inspired many a costume-wearer to mimic the effect; and the demand was so great that contact lens companies rushed to be the first to release of these lenses to the public.

At first this novelty item was fairly expensive, so only a small percentage of people could justify the cost for a costume. But these days, costume contact lenses are so affordable that just about anyone can get them. Plus, the effect they have is so dramatic and creates so much attention, that they become a bit addicting!

So what effects can you create with wacky contact lenses? Just about anything you desire! There are literally countless colors and designs available; you are only limited by your imagination (and, perhaps, your willingness to wear something so extreme).

The most common lenses to this day are vampire contact lenses. Starting with the release of Interview with a Vampire, people flocked to special effects contacts suppliers for blue lenses to look like Tom Cruise’s Lestat, and green contact lenses to emulate Brad Pitt’s character Louis.

Most recently, the Twilight series has inspired countless fans to wear amber or honey-colored lenses in hopes of looking like Edward Cullen; or crimson red for the Volturi clan.

The latest craze in many cultures is the fascination with anime and video game characters. For these types of costumes, you can find soft pink contact lenses, violet lenses, and even hot pink lenses.

Some lenses glow in the dark; others have crazy designs imprinted on the iris of the lens. You can get leopard print, zebra stripes, spirals, polka dots, cat pupils, bulls eyes, and just about anything else. You can even get any country’s flag or many sports team colors; perfect for supporting your favorite team!

So the next time you need to make a statement, use costume contact lenses to shout it to the world.
