Dallas Contact Lenses and Dry Eyes

contact-lenses-for-dry-eyes

Are you looking for Dallas contact lenses, but suffer from dry eyes? If so, you're not alone!

According to the National Women's Health Resource Center, Dallas ranks as the fifth worst city in the U.S. for dry eye syndrome; due to temperature, humidity, wind, pollutants, and allergens in the air. This makes it very difficult for people who live in Dallas to find the perfect Dallas contact lenses.

However, thanks to advances in contact lens technology, there are many options for people who suffer from dry eye syndrome but want to wear contact lenses.

Why do people with dry eyes have so many problems with contact lenses?

Until recently, contact lenses and dry eye syndrome did not go together very well. In addition, many people who have never shown any symptoms of dry eye syndrome prior to wearing contact lenses suddenly suffer from dry eyes once they begin wearing contact lenses. This is because they are wearing contact lenses that are made of materials that contain up to 70% water. As the day goes on and the lenses begin to dehydrate, they react by absorbing water from the eye to compensate for the lense dryness. This literally “sucks” moisture from the eye and into the lens, resulting in dry eyes.

For awhile, it was believe that RGP contact lenses (rigid gas permeable) were a logical alternative to people who suffer from dry eyes; because RGP lenses don't contain any water at all, and therefore would not absorb water from the eye as they began to dry out. However, RGP contact lenses were found to be even more uncomfortable, because their rigidity only magnified the dryness in the eye and also any minute scratches or tears that are common with dry eye syndrome.

But now, almost every major brand has contact lenses for dry eyes. Two of the brands that are rated the best contact lenses for dry eyes, and therefore are among the top of all Dallas contact lenses, are Proclear contact lenses and Accuvue contact lenses.

Both of these brands use a hydrogel material for their lenses, which contains much less water than lenses in the past. This results in lenses that are able to stay moist longer, without having to absorb water from the eye.

Proclear is rated one of the top most comfortable lenses, and are even one of the few brands that were declared by the FDA to “provide improved comfort for contact lense wearers who experience mild discomfort or symptoms relating to dryness during lens wear.”

This is due to Proclear's PC Technology, which uses a substance found in human cell membranes and which keeps water molecules present in the lense all day long; reducing the need for the lens to absorb water from the eye.

Acuvue uses Hydroclear technology, which means their material is made of silicone polymers that bind “water loving molecules” (also known as wetting agents) together; resulting in smooth, comfortable, lenses that retain water for better comfort.

If you have dry eyes and are looking for Dallas contact lenses, then you should look into Proclear or Acuvue as your most logical choices.
