Ordering Contact Lenses Online: There's More than Meets the Eye!

Did you know that you can save money by ordering contact lenses online?

When you buy your contact lenses online instead of in a retail store or at your eye care provider's office, you save money; up to 70% or more!  But, there are a few important things you should know before ordering contact lenses online. 

First of all, it helps to understand why you can usually find contact lenses for less online.  You see, when you buy contact lenses in a store or through your eye care specialist, you are paying for much more than just the lenses.  Retail stores and offices have all kinds of expenses that it takes to keep the store open; such as rent, electricity and other utilities, employee wages, and even advertising.  Retailers have to build a little extra into the cost of their products in order to balance out these costs.  It's not unfair or illegal; it's just how all retail stores are run. 

However, when you buy contact lenses direct from suppliers, they have almost none of these overhead costs.  That is why you can usually find the cheapest contact lenses online. 

When ordering contact lenses on the internet, it is important to keep a few things in mind:

1.         Perhaps the most important is that you must first have a contact lens prescription from a certified optometrist or ophthalmologist.  If you don't have a prescription, then make an appointment with an eye care specialist, and have him or her write down your contact lens prescription for you.  You are not required to buy your lenses at that time; but the doctor is required to give you your prescription.  Then, you can go home and order your contact lenses for less on the internet. 

            A prescription is important because contact lenses must be “fitted” to your eye.  In the same way that a pair of jeans might fit your friend perfectly but don't fit you at all, the specifics of your eye will determine your contact lens prescription.  So don't skip this important step and try to “guess” or go off of old prescriptions. 

2.         If, however, you are merely replacing your existing contact lenses (and have seen an eye doctor in the last year), then you can simply find your prescription on the box.  If your vision hasn't changed and you are happy with your current lens prescription, then it's simple to order replacement lenses online.  We do, however, recommend that you still see an eye doctor once a year to preserve the health of your eyes. 

3.         When doing your research and comparing contact lense prices, remember that sometimes there literally is “more than meets the eye.”  There are often hidden costs when ordering contact lenses on the internet, so research carefully.  For example, one site might seem to have the cheapest contact lenses, but they charge more for shipping.  Some sites offer discounts if you buy multiple products from them, or combine shipping charges.  Be sure to look past the surface cost of the lenses.
