Special Contact Lenses

There are many different reasons why people need special contact lenses. After all, when it comes to something as personal and as important as your vision, it just makes sense that we all have different needs.

Some people need special contact lenses because they have an eye condition that causes problems with contact lenses. For example, some people need contact lenses for astigmatism, which are called “toric” lenses. Others need multifocal contact lenses to help them see both near (for reading) and far. Other people with irregularly shaped eyes or keratoconus often need custom-fit lenses.

However, some special contact lenses aren't for vision problems at all, but are contact lenses for fun. Colored contact lenses are a great way to change your appearance without doing something drastic (like cutting your hair or getting a tattoo), they are temporary and not permanent, and usually are much cheaper.

If you want to do something subtle, there are contact lenses that are designed to merely enhance the color of your eyes. This works well if you have naturally light gray, blue, or green eyes, and want to keep your natural color but just want to make them stand out with a little more intensity.

Other people want to completely change the color of their eyes. Want to go from boring brown to bright blue? Or from pale green to a “brown-eyed girl”? Opaque contact lenses can change the color of even the darkest eyes. Freshlook contact lenses offer the most natural looking opaque lenses; their “three-in-one” technology blends three colors into one, creating the most natural eye color available.

There are even contact lenses that completely change the look of your eye; and can create all kinds of attention-grabbing effects. CIBA Vision contact lenses has a line called Wild Eyes, that offers lenses to make your eyes look like cat eyes, glow bright red, or look opaque white. These are most often used for theatrical productions or for special effects at Halloween.

However, even if you are just interested in special contact lenses for special effects, and do not need vision correction, you still need to see a qualified eye care practitioner for a prescription. Contact lenses are considered to be medical devices and you are required, by law, to get a prescription; even when ordering contact lenses online. This is because lenses need to be “fitted” specifically to your eye; otherwise ill-fitted contacts can lead to infection, eye damage, and even blindness.

If you find a site that says you can order contact lenses without a prescription, they are either misleading you or are breaking the law. What they might intend to say is that you can order their special lenses even if you don't need vision correction.

So whether you need specific lenses to work with eye conditions or contacts just for fun, there are special contact lenses just for you.
